Follow the Money Update focuses on independent expenditures in the 2024 Santa Clara election campaign, including the Santa Clara police union PAC and Related

As the 2024 Santa Clara election campaign ends, campaign donations all city races near $3 million, with spending reaching $2.8 million, according to reports filed as of Nov. 4 at 6 p.m.  Donations to individual candidates for city council, city clerk and police chief were $232,268,  while independent expenditure committees took in $2.75 million.

The 49ers donations to their four PACs remains at $2.4 million. Their spending over the past two weeks reached a total of $2.3 million.

The Santa Clara police union PAC has added a $70,000 donation from the Santa Clara police union, and a $5,000 donation from the California Real Estate PAC. This brings the police PAC’s total war chest to $223,000. The PAC’s expenditures reached $170,000.

It is notable that the police PAC has spent almost $37,000 on negative campaigning against Anthony Becker — more than twice what the PAC has spent on any other council candidate.

Related’s* four independent expenditure committee spent another $10,041, increasing their spending to $100,041. The developer’s reported donations are $49,000.

The Santa Clara firefighters union PAC has spent a total of $42,574, and reported donations of $9,237.

The Yes on I PAC (infrastructure bond) received another $2,000 donation from Local 393 Political Action Fund, bringing total donations to $52,000. The PAC’s other donation was $50,000 from DevCon Construction CEO, Gary Fillizetti. The PAC has spent $17,996.

The AFL-CIO Labor Council Committee on Education reported spending $21,848 in support of Measure I. The PAC hasn’t reported any receiving any donations in this election, and does not appear to have filed a summary report (460) with the city since 2018.

Individual candidates have received a total $232,268 in donations, and have spent $148,300.
