A new, state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility will soon take shape along one of Sunnyvale’s main corridors. While initial construction work on the new El Camino Hospital facility on El Camino Real near Mary Avenue has already started, the official groundbreaking ceremony took place on April 22.
“Patients in these types of facilities will learn how to speak again after a stroke, strengthen muscles after a broken hip and regain use of motor skills, such as your daily activities of living, cooking, driving, things that you take for granted each and every day, but not so much after you’ve suffered an injury,” said Dan Woods, El Camino Health’s CEO.
When completed, the project will include 52 private rooms, an interdisciplinary gym, therapeutic courtyard and transitional living apartments, all designed to help patients recover, regain independence and ultimately return to their daily lives.
Patients are expected to include those dealing with neurological conditions, recovering from strokes, brain or spinal cord injuries and amputations.
Dr. Meagan Littlepage, the medical director of rehabilitation services and stroke rehab at El Camino Hospital, says she and her team are excited about the facility and they appreciate the support El Camino Health gives to patients and physicians.
“By having the most state-of-the-art advancements in terms of biotechnology, then it sets them [patients] up to succeed in terms of getting higher rates of functional return, really promoting a safe discharge home, helping prevent them from having to come back to the hospital. It just really helps them in the recovery,” said Dr. Littlepage.
El Camino Health chose the location in Sunnyvale because data showed that many of the healthcare company’s patients were coming from the area to other facilities further away. Woods says smaller, satellite offices serve the community well.
“We received great response with regards to access, of being able to get in and not having to drive to one particular location and go to one big, large building and get lost, if you will,” said Woods. “I don’t want to equate it to this, but it’s almost similar to something like retail Starbucks that’s kind of like your neighborhood clinic, your neighborhood retail place or coffee shop that’s easily accessible. You get to know the people there. And again, it’s that personalized service and exceptional patient care.”
Sunnyvale Mayor Larry Klein and several other council members and city staff were on hand to celebrate the ribbon cutting. For them, turning this former used car dealership into a new healthcare facility is just one step in shaping the future of the El Camino Real corridor.
“As we looked at that specific plan, we’re looking at all kinds of uses. It was mainly retail right now, whether that’s grocery stores or auto dealerships or all that and the long-term vision of that plan was to add housing and adding rehabilitation facilities for seniors, for anyone who’s injured is an important part of that concept,” said Klein.
“It’s that long-term vision that nothing is going to change overnight, but [in] 20 or 30 years, you’re going to see different locations upgrade just like this,” continued Klein.
The new El Camino facility is located at 1027-1035 W. El Camino Real in Sunnyvale. If all goes as planned, it is expected to open in spring 2027.
